The Advanced Guide to Affiliate Marketing – Blog Monetization

The best thing about blogging is that you can use different monetization methods to make money from it. Google AdSense is not just the only monetization method but there are several other profitable ways too.

One of them is known as “Affiliate Marketing“.

Affiliate Marketing is a very popular method to earn money from a Blog. It is a type of online business where you can sell products or services for companies or individuals on commission basis.

In Affiliate Marketing you are provided with a unique tracking link (known as an affiliate link) from the vender (owner of the product or service) that you can use on the web to promote the product. When a visitor click on your affiliate link and purchases the product, you get commission in the sale.

The whole process is automated, and every sale is tracked by a system. Thus, you don’t need to worry about any fraud. There are several affiliate marketplace where you can register to get affiliate links for different products and promote them on your blog.

Every vendor has their own percentage for commission. For example: if the price of a product is $100 and the vendor is offering 50% commission, then as an affiliate you will get $50 in every sale made through your affiliate link. So basically you get paid for selling someone else products.

Although you can also sell your own products but that is beyond the scope of this course. In this course the focus is more on selling others products on commission basis. If you are interested in selling your own products then I suggest you to take our Product Launching course.

Since here in this course we are focusing on making money from a blog. Then lets discuss the procedure for promoting products on a blog. If you want to take Affiliate Marketing as your main business then I suggest you to go through our Affiliate Marketing Course too. However if you are comfortable with this business (Blogging) then let’s proceed further.

There are several places where you can get products to promote on your blog. Most of the products you will beoting will be eBooks, Softwares, Tools, Courses, Let’s talk about some of the popular sources first.

Step 2:- Click on a category OR use the search feature to find a product related to your blog. For example if your blog is related to “Xbox Gaming” then search for the terms “Xbox” or “Xbox Games”.

Here is the result for the term “Xbox”.

The Advanced Guide to Affiliate Marketing – Blog Monetization

On the first result page ClickBank.com displays 10 result. Each product has its own data so lets go through all the important information that you need to know. So that you can pick a product that will make you the most commissions.

As you can see with every product its Stats are shown. For example Initial $/sale, Avg %sale, Avg Rebill Total, Avg %rebill and Grav. These are important numbers so let me first explain what are they and why you need to look into it.

Initial $/Sale: It means the average commission made by the affiliates in the past 12 weeks. And you too can expect the same amount in every sale.

  • Avg %/sale: It means the percentage of commission every affiliate gets in a sale. For example in the first product it is 75%. Thus in every sale of product affiliate gets 75% commission and the remaining 25% goes to the owner of the product. You need to look at this number before promoting a number so that you can know how much commission you will be getting in a product if it is sold through your affiliate link.
  • Avg Rebill Total:- Some products are sold on monthly recurring payments. If a product is based on recurring subscriptions then this amount will show the total average amount you will get every month when you promote such product. This shows the average amount of commission made by the affiliates in the past 12 weeks.
  • The $0 indicates that this product is not based on recurring membership rather it is based on one time purchase. If a product is based on recurring membership then you will also make commission from the same customer every month till the customer cancel his/her subscription.
  • Avg Rebill%: This indicates the percentage of commission you will get every month in the sale of the product.
  • Grav: This is the most important number so make sure to always look at it when planning to promote a product from clickbank. The Grav which stands for Gravity indicates the number of affiliates promoting a product. If the gravity of a product is high then it means that more affiliates are promoting which indicates that the product is hot and selling well.

Gravity is calculated by ClickBank.com for every product and when an affiliate make commission from a product, a gravity of 0.5 is added to it. Only the first sale of an affiliate is counted in the gravity. It does not show the total number of sales for a product but rather it shows that at least that much affiliates have made a successful sale when promoting the particular product.

It is possible that a vendor’s gravity was 25 two weeks ago, and today this vendor’s gravity is only 2. You also need to understand that such a huge drop in a product gravity means that the product is no more useful, and that is why the gravity has dropped. It is recommended to pick products with a gravity of at least 5. Although you can test products below 5 gravity but rule of thumb is to go for a product with higher gravity.

These are the important factors providing.

Other Useful Tips for Selecting Profitable Product

Selecting a product is a tricky task and you should not blindly pick a product from the Clickbank marketplace to promote on your blog. You need to pick a product that is guaranteed to make you commissions. The following are some tips you should keep in mind while selecting a product.

Relevancy: It is important to select a product that’s relevant to your blog readers. If you promote a “Health” related product in a “Gaming” related blog then it will not make you commission, so be very careful about the relevancy and select a product that is closely related to your readers.

Product Lifecycle: Relevancy alone is not important; you also need to make sure that the product is evergreen. Evergreen means that it will stay for a longer period in the market. Some products have a very short life and after a few months they become outdated. Make sure to think about the product from a customer‘s perspective so that you can gain better idea of whether the product is good enough to be purchased or not.

Some products are time sensitive and get outdated after some time. So make sure to put your self in the place of customer and then decide weather the product you are going to promote is worth buying or not.

Alternative or Substitute Products: There are several products available in the Clickbank marketplace. Make sure to analyze other similar products so that you can pick the one that’s more popular and has the potential to make you the most money. You can search the name of the product in Google.com. For example “Product 1 Vs ” and let google help you find other similar products. If the other similar products are more popular and useful then you should not promote the later one.

Commission Percentage: Every vendor offers different percentages to their affiliates. It is better to get 75% commission than 50%. If the commission percentage is very low as compare to the products where the commission is very higher, then it is better to promote high commissioned product. However keep the other 3 tips in mind.

Design of the Vendor Website: Every product is promoted through a website. Visit the website of the vendor and have a look at it. If it is designed very well and contains true and the most up to date information, then it is good to promote it. Think about the product as a customer and if the website (sale page) can convince you then chances are that it can also convince others. [In order to view the sale page of a product simply right click on the title of the product as shown in the screenshot above and open in a new tab. This will bring the sale page of the product. Sale page simply means the website of the product where the customer will land to purchase it.]

No matter how useful a product is, if it is not presented well then no one will purchase it, so don’t waste your time and efforts by promoting a product that has a poor sale page.

These are some of the tips you should keep in mind when promoting a product. This is not just for the ClickBank.com products but you should apply them on any other product of another platform.

How to Create Affiliate Link for a Product?

Step 1:- With every product in the Marketplace there is a button “Promote”. Click on it and a popup window will appear.

The Advanced Guide to Affiliate Marketing – Blog Monetization

Step 2:- In the popup window your clickbank nickname is written already for you in the field “Account Name”. If it is not written then enter it manually. [As shown in the screenshot below.] Click on the “Create” button to create the affiliate link.

The Advanced Guide to Affiliate Marketing – Blog Monetization

Step 3:- After clicking on the “Create” button you will get your affiliate link for that product. Copy the complete link as shown in the screenshot below.

The Advanced Guide to Affiliate Marketing – Blog Monetization

Note:- In ClickBank the affiliate link is also known as HopLink.

Tip:- If you would like to get an advance Hoplink of a product you can also get your generate one by adding your account Nickname along with the Vendor Nickname with the hop.clickbank.net.

For example lets say your account nickname is track352

The vendor nickname in the above example was 3deathring [As shown below].

The Advanced Guide to Affiliate Marketing – Blog Monetization

Now the final HopLink will

become http://track352.3deathring.hop.clickbank.net

You can also use this HopLink to promote the product. It will automatically track sales for the product and will add in your account. To test your HopLink simply visit this in your browser and see if it goes to the sale page of the product. If it goes successfully and includes your nickname in the browser address bar, then it confirms that your hoplink is correct. If does not then you need to check for any errors in your nickname and the vendors nickname.

This Affiliate Link (Hoplink) can now be used anywhere on the internet. For example you can place it on your blog and when someone click on this link and purchase the product form the sale page, you will get your commission in your clickbank account. Similarly you can also share this link on FaceBook, Twitter and other Social Media websites. I will be explaining this in details in the Social Media Marketing course. I recommend you to go through it after the end of this course so that you can generate more sales for the product and make more commissions.

Remember, you will need to repeat these steps for every product on the clickbank. For every product you will need to click on the “Promote” button to get its HopLink. This is how the sale for every product is tracked by the ClickBank system.

As you can see the HopLink is very lengthy and looks very ugly. In order to shoorten it you can use URL shortner services. For example Bitly. With Bitly.com you can shorten long URLs so that you can share on facebook and other websites. In order to shorten the URL simply go the the website bitly and register a free account.

Login to your account and paste your HopLink in the box “Paste a Long URL here to shorten“. As shown in the screenshot below.

The Advanced Guide to Affiliate Marketing – Blog Monetization

It will automatically shorten the URL and you can then use it anywhere on the web.

For WordPress Bloggers

There is a very useful plugin called GoCodes. With this plugin you can easily cloak your URLs. Cloaking means to mask or hide the actual URL behind a shorter one. It is recommended to install this plugin and cloak all your affiliate links with it. In this way your readers will not know the actual URL of the link when clicking on it.

Download GoCodes Plugin from WordPress Directory:- https://wordpress.org/plugins/gocodes/

Watch this video to see how links are cloaked with GoCodes Plugin.

For Blogger.com (BlogSpot) Bloggers

There is no plugin feature available for Blogger.com. However you can use the Bitly.com option to shorten URLs. You can also use Goo.gl service to shorten long URLs.

How to Place Banners on Your Blog to Promote the Product?

Before you proceed lets first find a banner for the product you are going to promote. In ClickBank every vendor offer free banners of the products in different sizes to its affiliates. Step 3:- Click on the “Affiliates” page and you will see the different free materials available for you. Check if there are Banners available and copy the HTML code of the banner.

For example have a look on the screenshot below where I have highlighted the HTML code for a 250×250 Banner.

The Advanced Guide to Affiliate Marketing – Blog Monetization

After copying the HTML code you can paste in your blog. However make sure to update the HopLink with your own HopeLink. You can also directly enter your account NickName in the HTML code by the replace the “zzzzz” characters as shown in the screenshot above.

Note:- Most of the vendors have an affiliates page where they provide free promotional materials such as Banners, Emails, Articles, and Videos. Anyone can use them to promote the product. Always look for the Affiliates Page for the promotional materials.

For WordPress Bloggers

Go to your blog Dashboard>Appearance>Widgets and drag an HTML widget to your sidebar. Paste the HTML code of the banner and save it.

For Blogger.com (BlogSpot) Bloggers

Go to your blog Layout and click on Add a Gadget. Select the HTML/Javascrip widget and paste the HTML code for the banner.

This is how you can place a banner of a product with your own affiliate link. Now whenever someone clicks on the banner it will lead the visitor to the sale page of the vendor through your affiliate link. And any sale made will count in your commission.

You can see all the sales reports in your Dashboard on the “Reporting” area.

In order to edit your Payment Options and other information go to “Settings” and scroll down to the “Payment Information” section. From here you can edit your payment method and minimum payment threshold.

If you want to promote a product you will need to click on the “Join Program” link. So that you are given access to promote the product. Some products will require to first take approval from the administration of the product. In that case you will need to wait for the approval. However in most cases when you click on the “Join Program” you will be given instant approval.

However before promoting a product make sure to have a look on the stats. For example Average per sale, Average Commission and EPC.

  • EPC:- It stands for Earning Per Click. The higher EPC means that the product is selling good and every click is generating that much in profit. For example if every 100 clicks generates you $100 in commission then your EPC is 100/100 = $1.
  • Reversal:- It shows how many customers have requested for the refund. Higher reversal rate means that the product is not according to the expectation of the customers. You should stay away from the products which have high reversal rates.
  • Ave.Sale:- The average amount of sale of the product.
  • Ave.Comm:- The average amount of commission you will make in the sale of the product.
  • Commission Structure:- It shows the percentage of commission you will get in every sale. For example in the above screenshot it is 8%.
  • Cookie:- It is small piece of software that is downloaded to the visitors computer when he/she clicks on the affiliate link. 30 days means that after clicking on your affiliate link if the customer don’t purchase the product and then after 30 days he decides to purchase by going to the website directly, you will still earn commission for the sale.

How to Get Affiliate Link in ShareASale?

Step 1:- After clicking on the “Join Program” and getting approval you will be redirected to a page where you can get your affiliate link. Simply right click on the product and click on the “Copy link address” as shown in the screenshot above.

Note:- The link will look very lengthy but that is fine. This is how amazon affiliates links are designed. Do not remove anything from the link. Copy the whole link and if possible shorten it or cloak it.

Now you can use this affiliate anywhere to get traffic to it and make commissions in every sale.

If you want to get the Banner Code for a product then click on the “Banner Links” instead of the Product Links. As shown in the first screenshot.

This is how you can start with Amazon Associates. There are several other marketplaces where you can register to get affiliate links and then promote on your blog. Every marketplace will have different products and mechanism. So make sure to check out their Support portal for help and tutorials.

The following are some other marketplaces where you can get products to promote on your blog.

JVZoo

Commission Junction

ClickSure

4# – Direct Affiliations

On internet you will see different products that will be using their own affiliate programs. For example if you come across a website selling an ebook and it provides affiliates to promote it. Then in order to promote the ebook you will need to register with their own affiliate program to get the affiliate link.

So make sure to check individual products too.

In affiliate marketing you will need to your unique affiliate link for product so that all the sales are tracked and you get the commission in every sale. You should not promote the product website directly but instead you will need to promote through your affiliate link.

Tips for Affiliate Marketing

You may have heard many things about affiliate marketing but no matter what these are, it is unlikely that everyone is going to make awesome incomes of 5,000 – 10,000 dollars a month as there is very high competition in the affiliate marketing field. Please note also that you will not be paid unless you work for it. There is no magic wand to be waived and by which you are instantly paid.

Having said all of that, I now provide you with some tips below which should help you make money with affiliate marketing programs on the internet.

1. Google and Overture (Yahoo Advertising)

Although the days of free traffic are not completely over, they are fading away quickly. Working hard creating web pages that score well in the search engines is an option that you have, but it can be very hard to get pages that score well.

Using Google and Overture, you can pay for clicks and have the top three positions on the search engines that matter the most. If you are hoping to generate web traffic from Yahoo, all you need to do is be at the top of Google.

2. Email List

The ideal way to build free and residual income is to send offers to your own email list. The usual practice is to send traffic away and then hope for best but instead you should have your own email list to which you are able to send multiple offers from your affiliate marketing programs.

3. Generating Your Own Traffic

If each person filled out a form on your site, which generates 50 cents in revenue, would you be willing to continue paying someone else 25 cents to generate the same traffic? When it comes down to it, you will be paying for traffic in one form or another but to make more income online you will need to invest wisely in advertising.
Free traffic is there and easily available but doesn’t always work nor is it always reliable. When you invest in your own traffic methods including solo ads, you are for the most part, assured that your offers will be presented to persons who are targeted, interested and responsive.

4. Be Different

If you are in the affiliate marketing field to make money then you need to be doing things differently from what your competitors are doing. You need to think outside the box, be creative and exciting. Usually the owner of the product or service that you are promoting will provide you with promotion pieces such as email swipes, banners and so on. Even with these you have to find ways to use them creatively that can give you a return on your investment.
